HORSEMANSHIP TRAINING

The Journey from Ground to Saddle

Adam enjoys starting horses of all breeds and for all disciplines.

He finds working with the mind of the horse a rich and rewarding experience. It is a privilege to be part of a horses first steps towards its ultimate future and discipline and I train with this in mind.

We train from the ground up, and like the horse to feel soft, supple, confident and trusting as they work through the levels. All horses are different, and we adapt our training methods and approach to suit each individual horse and owner. Horses are in a variety of places to ensure they have been exposed to many elements before heading home, ie arena, bush, road, floating etc

Owners are encouraged to be a part of training sessions.  And further support/ lessons are encouraged so training techniques can be applied at home.

ADAMS 7 STEPS FOR TRAINING

“Based on the experience I’ve had with some of the finest horseman here and overseas, I’ve developed a systematic approach to horse training that works well for me. It is a system that allows each horse to develop suppleness and obedience in their own time. My approach involves seven separate steps and exercises that build upon each other on the ground so both horse and rider understand which zone controls what movements”

Basics of Adams training methods.. Terminology used during his sessions..

Early Foundation exercises:

Exercise 1.– Developing a Cool, Calm, Supple and relaxed mindset, using different stimulus around horses.

Exercise 2. – Supple left & right rein with lateral flexion through a mechanical and mental bend of the nose

Establishing Body Control Exercises:

Exercise 3. -Introducing Zone C – disengaging and movement of the hip from pressure, suppleness in the hind quarter.

Exercise 4 – Introducing Zone A – Developing control of the rein aids through the neck and shoulder.

Exercise 5 – Introducing Zone B – Gaining control through the barrel section, lateral movement from the mid section.

Advanced Training Exercises: – putting it all together

Exercise 6 – Establishing the aids of stop and back up, softly feel engagement from the hind quarter in to the rein to softly come to a stop and then back up.

Exercise 7 –Engage the hip. Once all the previous 6 exercises are smooth and well established this can now be achieved. Controlling the hip to engage and step in to then further establish advanced training techniques going forward.

Zones Relevant to the horse:

Zone A – Wither to nose

Zone B –Flank to wither

Zone C –Hip,flank to tail

Zones Relevant to rider:

Zone A – every part of you from your head to your fingers

Zone B – Your chest to your waste

Zone C– Your waist to your toes.

Re Education – Problem Behaviours

We take a wholistic approach to behavioural issues.

Years of experience have guided me to learn from each horse and approach their needs as an individual, I believe the horse must be trusting, soft, supple and obedient prior to working through issues. Adam works with problem horses from all disciplines that are training at all levels.

It is important to address Issues that arise as soon as possible, as if left unresolved they can seriously disrupt and impact the relationship you have with your horse, and even morph into more serious issues. When addressing problem horses we like to find the root cause of the issue and often go back to the horses past and base level skills to ensure the horse hasn’t missed any starting fundamentals.

Adam works in conjunction with both the body and the mind of the horse to ensure issues are dealt with in a way the horse can move forward with a renewed sense of confidence and trust.

Training Horse & Rider to Re-Store Confidence

Adam has a passion for both horses and people.

Restoring confidence in the nervous horse and rider are Adams specialty.

Adams calm, caring, knowledgeable, fun personality allow him to communicate openly and freely with clients to help them build the confidence and restore trust they need to progress through the levels.

Initially Adam likes to work with the horse to assess suitability and prior training.

He then teams rider and horse together, initially on the ground, moving to the saddle, arena and out on the trails.

Adam genuinely enjoys seeing his clients improve their horsemanship skills and maximise their relationship with their horse.
